Walk-Ons, Inc. was organized in the early 70’s by a group of college students who were dissatisfied with the roles they were getting in college plays. They decided to only list their walk on roles on their resumes…and they also started producing their own shows. The first one was a gritty production of West Side Story in an old gymnasium with a sixty foot stage floor, graffiti on the walls and real trash spilling out of garbage cans. That was in 1976 and people still talk about that production.
In 1980 the company moved to Salt Lake City and became a nonprofit organization, doing shows around the city in found spaces. Memorable shows were Streetcar Named Desire, On The Twentieth Century, Huefner Against the Reich, of Mice and Men, Chorus Line and Driving Miss Daisy.
In 2016 they formed a partnership with Dr. Jaqueline Eaton of the U of U College of Nursing. Dr. Eaton was especially interested in older people and their caregivers. She created an ethno drama directed by Justin Ivie called Portrait of a Caregiver. It was performed all over Utah from Logan to St. George from 2016 to 2021. In 2022, with a grant from U of U College of Nursing, Walk-Ons made a film of the production.

Sometimes the opportunity to do a play comes at an important time. That is true for this one. Jayne recently cared for her older sister Barbara Ellen who was suffering from dementia. She passed away on January 9, 2026. Jayne had never dealt with dementia. It was overwhelming and heartbreaking. This play gives her the chance to honor Ellen and better understand what was happening to her sister. Thanks, Jim.
