DIRECTOR'S NOTE
I wrote this play on commission for my good friend and co-conspirator Ty Hawton in early 2022. Now, I have had the extraordinary gift of walking with these actors and designers to direct the show before you. I wrote this play with my grandmother on my mind, and my experiences living with and caring for her while she was on hospice. Since then, I have worked as a hospital chaplain and guided many patients and families through hospice, death, and grief. Grief is holy. Death is a doorway. Pain is patient - so, so patient. I invite you to consider: family, labor and productivity, time spent, and priorities and choices. “But as for me and my house, we will serve each other.” May you find those who will choose you, every time.
NOTE FROM THE DRAMATURG
I saw the original production of Saintmaker back in 2022 and I fell in love with the show. I adore that the siblings are based on biblical siblings from the town of Bethany; Lazarus, Mary, and Martha. A story involving Mary and Martha is found in Luke 10, when Jesus came to visit the sisters. Martha did the housework while Mary sat and listened to Jesus. When Martha got upset with her sister, Jesus said “Mary hath chosen that good part.” I don’t doubt that Jesus recognized that Martha’s actions were born out of love for him. Everyone has to make choices where every option is good, but choosing one thing means losing another. Yet in the end, I believe any choice that lets us spend time or serve the people we love can be considered a “good part.”

Riley Trepanier is a Kennedy Center award-winning playwright and is beyond excited to have his play “Saintmakers” onstage here at Eccles. He loves being involved in all aspects of theatre, including stage management, acting, and wardrobe. He is currently in the grad school trenches and works as a chaplain for a children’s hospital. He dedicates this show to Irene, Noah, and Trevyn.

Stephen received an MFA at The Actors Studio Drama School in New York City. He is excited to be a part of this wonderful production with such a fantastic creative team. He is grateful to be a part of the arts community here in the Salt Lake area and hopes to continue to help the arts to thrive.

Kristina works in the film industry as a set decorator. Two of her films have made it to the NY Tribeca Film Festival and one had an international theatrical premiere. Kristina is thrilled to return to the stage, after a 3 year hiatus.

Previously Laney did the costuming for a Goth-inspired Hamlet. She is very excited to be involved in Saintmakers and bring its concept to life.

Kobe studied acting at UVU, and has been in several community productions including Murder By The Book at the Covey Center for the Arts, and The Three Musketeers at the Angelus Theater.

Chelsea is a playwright and actor based in American Fork, Utah. Her work as a playwright and actor has previously been featured in Wasatch Theater Company’s 24 Hour Theatre Festivals as well as their Page-to-Stage Festivals. She received her MFA in Creative Writing and Writing for the Performing Arts from UC Riverside and her BA in Playwriting from Brigham Young University. She is ecstatic to be a part of this production!

Marc is glad to be performing back at the Regent Eccles. He has done shows for Utah Opera, CBS Productions, USA Productions, Desert Star theater, and now Wasatch Theater Company. Shows include, Story of Columbine, Phantom of the Opera, Promised Land, Emma, and Frankenstein.

Amber Knaras - bio not available.

Braxton Young Church’s dramaturgical work focuses on the themes and ideas of a play in addition to factual information. Their hope tonight is that the audience members see the world a little differently because of this show. Previous work includes It’s a Wonderful Life: the Radio Play (Covey Center for the Arts), Little Happy Secrets (Salt Lake Fringe Festival) and Your Servant, Mephistopheles (Glasgow Fringe Festival, online performance). You can see more of their dramaturgical work this upcoming May at the Angelus Theatre’s production of Valhalla: a Viking Rock Opera.
